Just a few months ago, India elected narendra modi of Bhartiya Janta Party as it's prime minister, in hope that the new government will immediately stop inflation by using some magic stick (Yes, they are that innocent and economical illiterates). They did so, partially because both Modi and BJP highly criticised the earlier government of Indian National Congress, lead by Dr. Manmohan Singh, who himself is an expert in economics.
BJP blamed him for the inflation in the country. BJP also took a big part in spreading the misconception that all the inflation is a direct result of corruption in the Dr. Singh government. In reality, Dr. Singh did not control inflation because he could not control inflation. Nobody can, not without paying a huge cost of it and having a very negative impacts on economy. This is not my opinion but an economical reality.
Public opinion about the government was not at all positive at the time of it's last years. If they had controlled inflation, only they would've benefited from it. But there was no way Singh could've controlled inflation. If he could've, he would've. But, Modi and party painted a very negative picture of Singh and Congress party, blaming them for inflation and poor economical conditions of India. BJP literally fought the elections on the point of inflation. Tagline of BJP campaign was "Acche din ayenge"- translating into English as "Good days will come". What a common man interprets from this line is that inflation will stop. This resulted in favor of BJP. People elected them and the Congress couldn't even win 1/10th of the parliament seats.
Modi should've studied the economics of inflation. He shouldn't have played politics over this issue. Now that he has come into power, he and BJP have started to understand the situation. The first major decision BJP government took after coming into power is to increase railway fare by 14%. But Monthly pass for the Mumbai suburban railway was increased by more than 200%. The situation was similar in other cities having suburban railway. Most of the people in Mumbai rely on the railway for going to work everyday. This hike put a huge economic burden on them. Not only that, all the food supply of Mumbai depends on the railways. This decision is only provocative to the inflation. The Railway minister said that Indian Railways is in huge loss and they have to increase fare so as to reduce economic stress on government and start getting profit from railway. This is acceptable, railways shouldn't suffer loss and they shouldn't become burden on government. What's not acceptable is betraying people. Telling them inflation will stop if you vote us and making inflation causing decisions after coming into power.
If this wasn't enough, another decision taken by the new government was to increase fuel prices. Which also was inevitable as a result of increased fuel prices in the international market due to crisis in Iraq. It is clear from the current situation that any government has very less or almost no control on inflation. Modi had created a false belief in the people of this country that it has. He shouldn't havemade promises he couldn't keep.
In India, there is another belief that you don't have to be well educated to be a politician. If our politicians were well educated, they would've studied the flaws in our current system and would've worked towards solving them. But they're just interested in playing dirty politics. They're not there to serve people, they're just there to benefit themselves. All the parties in India are like that. I am not denying that there are not good people in politics. There are, Dr. Singh was one of them. But another thing his government is infamous about was it's so called 'policy paralysis'. The government did not have a clear majority and had to be supported by few other local parties. Thus, any decision proposed to be taken by government was opposed by some party along with a threat to remove support and put government in minority. As a result no decisions could be taken or implemented. This is the problem with Indian politics. Good people like Dr. Singh are continuously overpowered by the other bad people in politics.
Only the people of India can change this sad reality. India's democracy is a representative democracy. People are supposed to elect the best candidate in their constituency and all the elected candidates are supposed choose.one of them as their prime minister. Yet, this was not the case during this general elections. BJP declared Narendra Modi as parties prime ministerial candidate. As the chief minister of state of Gujarat, image of Modi was pretty good. This resulted in people voting BJP candidates just because they wanted Modi to become prime minister. In doing so, people elected candidates who were not the 'best' of all candidates in their constituency. They elected candidates who have criminal cases filed against them.
This should stop. Firstly, BJP shouldn't have declared Modi as candidate in the first place. And even after that people should've tested the worthiness of the BJP candidate in their constituency. But this couldn't be expected from them, as they are not very aware of the concept that the best candidate in the constituency.should be voted. Even a responsible citizen like my mother was put in the dilemma that should she vote for the best candidate or.should she vote for the BJP candidate just because she wants a stable government of Modi. When the best candidate in the constituency is voted by people, only the good people will go to the parliament and there won't be the problem of people in parliament opposing the good decisions.
