India, the worlds largest democracy (by size) recently underwent elections, electing Narendra Modi of Bhartiya Janta Party as it's prime minister, what made these elections so special was that these were the first general elections since the rise of social media. Modi really did use the power of social media to his advantage.
This had a significant impact on a country's youth who voted for the first time, as well as on the large no. of population owning smartphones. Technology played a big role in the victory of Modi, but is it playing any role in the development of India?
The answer deceptively appears to be yes. India is developing at a rapid pace, not as much as China, but it will soon become one of the largest economies, probably because it is home to 15-20% of world population. The main problem in front of Indian economy is that it's exporting much less than it is importing. Does it not have enough resources? Well, it doesn't have enough oil, but it leads when it comes to human resources. There is nothing which can be blamed for this problem. Another big problem- corruption. About which I don't really need to talk.
So, how can this be solved. There's only one answer according to me and that is technology. India is using technology where it doesn't need to be used and not using it where it needs to be. Its youth are using smartphones wasting their time in doing unproductive things (which includes me to some extent) but it's farmers are still ploughing their small fields with the help of animals whereas they could improve
Not only India is not using technology productively but is also not inventing any. India is certainly not where it should be in the field of science and technology. When Indians say that they invented the our number system without which none of our scientific advancements would have been possible, they keep feeling proud about a thousand year old glory and forget that they have contributed almost nothing in the last few centuries. Most of the Indian people often think they are intelligent than western people, giving the fact(I don't know whether it really is the fact)that 40% of NASA employees are Indian as evidence. These so called intelligent Indians are migrating to the west, Mainly because they have less scope in India, less opportunities, An industry not funding and understanding importance of R&D, and a society who praises scientists but does all the religious nonsense and putting all the scientific knowledge into trashcan. This society affects Indians attitude towards solving a problem. Rather than asking people to use 'khadi' (a local type of cloth) in the name of nationalism, Indians should think how can they make import quality cloths as cheap as khadi with the help of technology. Rather than stop using plastic bags because it's not eco-friendly, they should think about how to make it eco-friendly just like Levi's did, making jeans out of recycled plastic.
India with the help of indigenous technology could improve its industry, improve quality and quantity of production increasing it's exports. Also it could get rid of corruption with computerization.
But rather than inventing an indigenous software system for all the govt documents countrywide, they would buy some software from Germans or Americans and take one final chance to take money 'under the table'.
Anyway! The point is India should start developing science and technology only then they would become a developed country and not by counting GDP growth. Just imagine what would India become if a visionaries like Steve Jobs gets born in India, India could overtake China, and might as well become worlds largest economy overnight! Given India's population, it has probabilistic advantage of some miracle like that happening. We can hope that this potential Steve Jobs is not waiting for the stars to be in appropriate position to start his business !!
